Charles Eugene Porter enlisted into the C.S. Navy at Aquia Creek Landing, Virginia on May 4, 1861, and served as "acting gunner" during its assault by Union gunboats from May 29th to June 1st. Resigned from the navy in February, 1862, to recruit members for the Maryland Confederate Cavalry. In October 14, 1862, He enlisted as a private in Capt. Massie's Company (Fluvanna Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia). He was present at the battle of Fredericksburg as a part of Nelson's Reserve Artillery Battalion and probably at the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. On August 26, 1863, he transferred back to the C.S. Navy as a Seaman aboard the C.S.S. Arctic, then stationed at Richmond. He was later appointed to the rank of Master's Mate. While serving aboard the Arctic at Wilmington, in October of 1863, he was transferred to the C.S.S. Neuse (then being fitted at Kinston, North Carolina) to supervise the installation of her guns, and on December 27, 1863, he was commissioned at the rank of "Full Gunner" in the Provisional Navy of the Confederate States. By early February of 1865, he had been transferred to the C.S.S. Richmond of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron and was at Richmond, Virginia when the city fell in April. He escaped with Admiral Raphael Semmes and others by train to Danville, Virginia, then to North Carolina, where he was paroled in Greensboro on April 26, 1865.
