If you were a friend of Joseph John Janulis, you called him "Jan". He accomplished a lot in his short lifetime, but cancer took him before his 40th birthday. He enjoyed golfing and bowling, also fishing especially with his dad. They fished in the Bahamas and Newfoundland, Canada catching some real beauties. After high school, Jan joined the Air Force in 1949 & was honorably discharged in 1953. His job as a radio mechanic prepared him for his next journey.
He got a job at Hallicrafters Company in Chicago. Hallicrafters, founded in 1932, manufactured, marketed, and sold radio equipment. The company had a fascinating history. During the Cold War era they took an active part in the Atlas missile program (US) and Blue Streak program (UK) for which Top Secret clearance was required. Jan had that clearance in 1960. He worked at Hallicrafters until his untimely death in 1971.
In 1957, Jan started night school to earn a college degree. In June 1964, Jan earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree from DePaul University. He had many friends and was a beloved family member, especially to one little boy and girl who always called him "Big Joe" a nickname he earned because he was very tall. Jan never married.
