He served in the Army from 1955 to 1957. He was a material handling specialist at the Ford Motor Co. in Brook Park for 44 years before retiring in May. Mr. Chigas attended St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Avon. He was a member of UAW Local 1250. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watching sports. Survivors include his sons Robert E. Jr. of Misawa, Japan, Richard S. of Elyria and John M. of Pinckney, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and sisters, Ellen Wolanin of Hastings, Pa., Elizabeth "Betty" Marino of Michigan, Gertrude Gromek of Redford, Mich., and Mary Lou Vislosky of Wickliffe. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Chigas Sr. in 1970, and Mary Chigas (nee Kopera), in 1975; and a brother, John Chigas Jr., in 1950. VFW Post 1079 in Elyria will conduct full military honors at cemetery.
