Buckles was born May 10, 1928, in Holyoke to Carl and Hazel (Wettstein) Buckles. While growing up he especially enjoyed rattlesnake hunting.
"Buckles," as he was more commonly known, attended school in Holyoke, graduating from Holyoke High School. He was employed by the State Highway Department from 1948 to 1983 and retired after 35 years of service.
On Aug. 1, 1966, he married Edythe Cunningham, and they lived in Akron until their deaths.
After Buckles retired, he enjoyed working in his shop, coin collecting and traveling extensively throughout the United States with his wife. In 1990, she suffered a stroke, and Buckles devoted his life to caring for her in their home until her death Sept. 29, 2001.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Hazel Buckles, his wife and five brothers and sisters.
He is survived by one sister, Dorothy Jo Hartman of Baldwin, Ill.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hobo Nickel Society.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:30 p.m. from the First Presbyterian Church in Akron with Rev. Susan Spencer officiating. Interment will follow in the Akron Cemetery with Brenner Funeral Home of Akron in charge of arrangements.
