James F. Yates, 68, of Chillicothe, died 2:09 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2010, in Adena Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born October 10, 1942, in Scioto County, to James L. and Lilly Vest Yates. On December 21, 1992, he married the former Mary E. Shope, who survives, of Chillicothe.

Also surviving are children, Susie Messer, Judy Smiar, both of Mingo Co., WV, James F. Yates, Jr., Jerry L. Yates, Christopher Allen Yates, all of Columbus, Melvin (Amy) Yates, of MI, Megan E. Yerian, of Chillicothe, Michael (Kelly) Skeens, of San Antonio, TX and Harriet Yerian, of Reynoldsburg; numerous grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Lou Yates, of Baltimore, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, James L. Yates; mother, Lilly Finn; and a sister, Judith Winer.

James served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was owner and operator of the former Proud Mary Express Trucking.

Services were entrusted to Ware Funeral Home of Chillicothe, Ohio.
