Funeral services for Ray P. Gardner, 77, of 1220 E. Patterson, will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 in the Funeral Chapel of Davis and Davis. The Rev. John Goodwin, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery.
Mr. Gardner died Tuesday afternoon at 2:10 in the Adair County Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since Feb. 22. He had been in failing health several years.
Born April 23, 1895 in Iowa Falls, Ia., he was the son of Fred A. and Mary Minerva Patterson Gardner. On June 11, 1922 in Peoria, Ill., he married Alma Lee Humphrey who preceded him in death on April 1, 1972. Also preceding him in death was one sister, Mrs. Bud (Ruth) Brady.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. William (Doris) Cundiff of 1503 E. Alexander, Evonne Mills of Chillicothe, Mrs. Bruce (Carol) Collier of 1302 E. Patterson and Mrs. Mel (Justine) Brock of ElDorado, Ark.; fourteen grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Charles (Marie) Garner of Webster Groves.
Mr. Gardner was reared on a farm near Gibbs. He attended Kirksville High School and the Bradley Polytechnic Institute School of Horology in Peoria, Ill.
In 1923 Mr. Gardner opened a jewelry store in Marceline and returned in 1924 to Kirksville where he purchased an interest in the Miller Jewelry Company. In 1935 he opened the Ray P. Gardner Jewelry Store on the south side of the square which in 1951 became Gardner-Collier Jewelry. In the 1930's he purchased Stout's Music House and owned it until early in the 1950's when he sold part interest to Harold Epperson.
Mr. Gardner was president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1943 and was a member of the Board of the Kirksville Savings and Loan Association. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion and also a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge 366, AF and AM. He was a member of the Spring Lake Board and a member of the Board of Trustees of Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine for 25 years.
Mr. Gardner was a member of the First Baptist Church and served on the Board of Deacons of the church for many years.
During World War I, Mr. Gardner served as a pharmacist's mate in the United States Navy.
Bearers will be: Dr. Wray Rieger, Jim Gibson, Dr. C. D. Davis, Harold Epperson, Paul Snyder, Ivan Hayden, Arthur Peterson and Dr. William C. Kelly.
