Sociologist/educator. William Howard Hunter Higman, who went by the name Howard Higman, was a son of Joseph H. Higman (1865-1935) and Clara Higman (1870-1961), husband of Marion C. Higman (1918-1998). Graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder (BA, 1937; MA, 1942, awarded in lieu of completing a PhD due to the onset of World War II)-thesis was entitled "A Study of the Theory of the Effect of War." Served on the Shipbuilding Stabilization Committee of the War Production Board during World War II. Professor Emeritus of sociology, University of Colorado at Boulder-he was on the faculty from 1946 to 1985; Chairman of the Department of Sociology from 1953 to 1955, from 1970 to 1974, and, from 1984 to 1985. Worked with VISTA and other anti-poverty programs. Founder (1948) of the annual Conference on World Affairs at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The Conference is a forum on virtually all aspects of contemporary life. Participants in the Conference's history include Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962), Molly Ivins (1944-2007), I.F. Stone (1907-1989), Studs Turkel (1912-2008), Harold Taylor (1914-1993), Adam Yarmolinsky (1922-2000), Henry Kissinger, Arthur Miller (1915-2005), Steve Allen (1921-2000), Norman Cousins (1915-1990), Roger Ebert (1942-2013), H. Bruce Franklin (1934-), R. Buckminister Fuller (1895-1983), Charles Krauthammer, Ahmad Ghoreichi, and, Sulak Sivaraksa. Higman helped to establish the Silver and Gold Record, the University of Colorado's four-campus* faculty and staff newspaper. * UCB (Boulder), UCD (Denver), UCCS (Colorado Springs), and, UCHSC (Health Sciences Center), in 1970-this publication was terminated by CU President Bruce Benson because of budget restraints in 2009.
