Mary Olivia Carroll was the daughter of Sarah Miller and her second husband, James Carroll. Mary had no children but raised two of the grandchildren of her half-brother, William Nesbit, after their parents died. These were sisters Elizabeth Jane (Burns) Ellis and Louisiana (Burns) Matthews.

Mary died between 4 Nov 1859, when she wrote her will (DeKalb County, George Wills Book A, p. 206), but before 5 May 1860, when the census was taken in DeKalb Co., GA. Gwinnett County records state that she was buried next to her mother.
