"Ollie Simpson Clemence Dec. 25, 1914 -Jan. 28, 2010
Ollie Simpson Clemence died Jan. 28, 1910 leaving her family, friends and former students a legacy of the necessity of continuing education and constantly growing. Ollie's family moved to Cottonwood in 1924 where she attended Clemenceau Elementary School and graduated from Clarkdale High School. Believing even then that a woman definitely needed a college education, Ollie graduated from Arizona State Teachers College in Tempe in 1938, took classes at the University of Hawaii and then earned her Master's in Education from NAU. Ollie enjoyed producing plays for her students and the community and taught them many dances. Long before the current trend, hands-on teaching was her expertise. She retired from Liberty School faculty after 30-plus years of service. As an artist and adventurer, Ollie, the talented artist, continually searched for new techniques in watercolor and oil painting through classes. There were always new countries to explore even though she had traveled around the world. Her life reflected a quote found in one of her books, "Life is like chasing a receding horizon." Survivors are daughter Janna Riggs (Jim), grandchildren Harold K. (Carolyn) and great-grandchildren Jason and Maryanne, Kara Riggs Perritt (Phil) Ryan and Caitlyn, Thomas Riggs (Buffi) Ashley, Karissa and Nathan. One brother, Theodore Simpson. survives in addition to many nieces and nephews. Deceased siblings are Bennett Pierce, William F. Simpson, and Lucresia Bennett A special thank-you is extended to the staffs at Circle B Adult Care Homes, 418 N. Austin Blvd., Willcox, AZ 85643, and Charles Wm. Leighton Jr. Hospice, P.O. Box 115, Willcox, AZ 85644. Any memorial contributions in Ollie's name to these organizations would be appreciated."
