WALDENBURG - Ross "Hamp" Wood, 94, of Waldenburg passed away March 30, 2022, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro.

He was born Oct. 2, 1927, in Paragould to the late William Puryear Wood and Mary Green Wood.

During his life, he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as an aircraft welder.

After he returned from the service, he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Prestidge on July 18, 1947.

Hamp and Pat were a couple to admire, they were married 72 years until her death in 2020.

Hamp was a good friend to many and a best friend to many more, always lending a listening ear. He was first a Christian, a faithful member of Weiner First Baptist Church where he led the singing for many years.

Hamp made a life out of farming rice and soybeans after returning home from serving his country. His fondest possession was the farm they purchased years ago and built their home.

The farm was where they left their hearts when he and Pat moved to St. Bernards Village a few years ago due to failing health.

He truly loved to travel with friends. Every year they would plan a vacation, whether they drove to the west coast, east coast, or down in Mexico, they spent their time enjoying the beauty of the Lord's creations.

Hamp enjoyed crappie fishing, especially at their fishing camp in Mellwood. He enjoyed his time at the camp entertaining friends, family, and most of all, his grandchildren.

After retirement from decades of farming, he relied on his talent for woodworking to pass the time. He could take a pile of sawdust and turn it into the most beautiful table ever seen; he could repair, fix and build most anything imaginable. He was known for remodeling homes.

He loved his shop and spent many happy hours making small treasured items for friends and family, most of all for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Hamp has joined Pat on that heavenly farm, and quite frankly, he could not wait to be with her again. We all know she had lunch prepared and a slice of coconut pie for him when he walked in those heavenly doors.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, William Hassel Wood, daughter-in-law, Cecelia Wood, four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his grandchildren, Ross (Sarah) Wood of Stuttgart, Edie (Mark) Johnson of Raleigh, N.C., and Charlie (Renae) Wood of Paragould; and great-grandchildren, Savannah Wood, Josh Johnson, Taylor Johnson, Eric Johnson, Isabella Wood and Landon Wood.

Please join us at a graveside service at 10 a.m. April 9 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Weiner to celebrate the life of Hamp. Don Martin will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in "honor of Hamp Wood" to the Weiner Fire Department, 101 N. Washington St., Weiner 72479, or the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House, 1148 E. Matthews Ave., Jonesboro 72401, www.stbernards.info/foundation/donations.

Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
