US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Hugh Wallace Breakenridge enlisted in the Marine Corps 9 April, 1942 from Dinsdale, Iowa. Assigned as inactive reserve to the Platoon Leaders Unit, 9th Reserve Unit, NTS Great Lakes, Illinois. 30 April, 1942 called to active duty and assigned to B Company, Candidates Class, Marine Corps Schools, MCB Quantico, VA. 18 July, 1942 commissioned as a Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenant. 18 July, 1942 assigned to E Company, 2nd Battalion, Reserve Officer Class (ROC), MB Quantico. VA.

1 October, 1942 assigned to I Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines (Rein), MCB New River, NC. 31 March, 1943 promoted to 1st Lieutenant. 1 May, 1943 assigned to M Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines. During August, 1943 moved by ship via Norfolk, Virginia and the Panama Canal to San Diego and trucked to Tent Camp # 3 at Camp Pendleton where the 25th Marines became part of the 4th Marine Division.

10 January, 1944 embarked USS William P Biddle (APA-8) at San Diego for movement overseas. 22 January, 1944 at Lahaina Roads, Maui. 31 January-28 February, 1944 participated in combat operations and occupation duties in the Marshall Islands. During March, 1944 embarked Naval Vessel, arrived in Hawaii and based at Camp Maui. Assigned to HQ Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division as the Battalion Assistant Plans and Training Officer.

12 May, 1944 embarked USS Leonard Wood (APA-12) at Maui for landing rehearsals. 20-29 May, 1944 in Pearl Harbor. 8-11 June, 1944 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 15 June, 1944 landed on Yellow Beach Two Saipan D-Day and participated in combat operations until Wounded in Action on 22 June, 1944. Evacuated to Hawaii and hospitalized in US Naval Hospital # 10 at Aiea on Oahu for two months. Upon discharge from hospital assigned to HQ Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines at Camp Maui and promoted to Captain.

16 January, 1945 embarked USS Sanborn (APA-193) at Maui for landing rehearsals. 27 January, 1945 departed Pearl Harbor. 5-7 February, 1945 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 11-16 February, 1945 at Saipan, Marianas. 19 February, 1945 landed on Blue Beach One Iwo Jima D-Day assuming command of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines. Participated in combat operations, Wounded in Action on 23 February, 1945 but refused evacuation. Killed in Action on 27 February, 1945.

Awarded Silver Star for heroism (Posthumously).

Initially buried in Grave 810. Row 17, Plot 1 of the 4th Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima.

1948 returned to the US for permanent burial in Buckingham Cemetery, Traer, Iowa on 24 June, 1948.
