At the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home retirement community. He was a longtime resident of Crownsville, MD, and retired to Delaware in the early 1980s. He resided in Huntingtown, MD, since 1997.

Early in his career, he worked for the B&O Railroad, and later as a carpenter for the State of Maryland.

He married Marie A. Cain on December 23, 1939. She died in 1998.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda M. Wilson; sons, Charles M. Althoff & Donald R. Althoff; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Interment followed funeral services conducted at the Rausch Funeral Home, Owings, MD.
