Herman Elmer Cox, a retired Stamford businessman, died October, 26 in Stamford. He Was 100 years old. Graveside services will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Highland Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Jacob West officiating, under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors Friday, October 29, 2010, from 5:30- 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Herman was born September 10, 1910 to Elmer Edgar and Ada Azlee (Mahan) Cox in Mills County, Texas. In 1921, he moved with his family to Breckenridge and then to Albany and finally to Stamford in 1924. Herman lived the remainder of his life in Stamford. On July 15, 1931, he married Vergie Mae Taylor in Goldthwaite, Texas. She preceded him in death on February 1, 1998.
Herman worked as an aircraft mechanic at the flight school during World War II and farmed near Avoca. After the war, he moved to Stamford and operated a dairy. In 1946, when Jones County Implement Company opened for business, Herman went to work for them and in 1958 sold the dairy and bought interest in the Implement Company. In later years, he purchased the entire Company and operated it as Jones County Implement Company and Cox Equipment Company until 1989. For years, Herman was the high volume dealer in Texas, winning awards from Case, New Holland and Hesston, earning he and his wife trips to many foreign countries. Herman was a member of the Exchange Club of Stamford, Masonic Lodge #853 and was a Shriner. He and his wife were active in the local chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Herman was a member of First Baptist Church where for many years he served as a Deacon.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; an infant son; an adult son, Charles Leroy Cox; and two sisters, Opal Lee Tonroy and Winnie Mae Herrington.
He is survived by three sons, Joseph Elmer (J.E.) and wife, Betty Ann of Dallas; Bobby Wayne of Battle Creek, Michigan; Wilbur Lee and wife Hoa of Stamford; four granddaughters, Jennifer Renee Cox and husband Hinkmond Wong of Sunnyvale, California, Cynthia Michelle Cox of Foster City, California , Julie Jeanine Cox and husband Charles Snyder of Munich, Germany and Lien Lea Merritt and husband Kirk of Grand Prarie. Five great grandchildren, Zaria and Cort Merritt; and Darby, Taylor and Charles Snyder. A sister Lillian Lois Massey of Texas City and a brother, William Lloyd Cox of San Antonio.
