Born in Sullivan Co., NY, his family moved in 1812 to Susquehanna Co., PA when John was 9 years old. He is the son of Joseph and Anna (Gillett) McKune.
In 1831 he married Frances Stewart, the grandaughter of the Revolutionary War leader, Lazarus Stewart. They lived across the state border in Windsor, Broome Co., NY, where Frances was from.
In 1844 they moved to Cattaraugus Co., PA, then in 1846 to Lee Co., IL with his brother, Hezekiah.
In 1855 the family moved to Crystal Twp., Tama Co., IA. They brought 30 head of cattle and build a log house.
In 1862 his son, John Espy, died in a Confederate prison camp in Georiga. By 1870 John and Frances were living with their daughter, Augusta Wood.
