The wife of the late John A. Derr, former mayor of Frederick, county commissioner, and state senator of Frederick County, who died March 1975.
Born Jan. 18, 1909, in Myersville, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Henry and Melissa Summers Brandenburg.
Mrs. Derr was a graduate of Middletown High School and Strayers Business College. In 1920, she began her business career with the Federal Land Bank of Baltimore. For over 20 years, she held numerous positions concluding as administrative assistant to the bank president.
Following her move to the Frederick area, she served as Bridgewater College's area coordinator for fund-raising efforts for their Crusade for Excellence. She then served Frederick Church of the Brethren as church secretary for several years.
In the early 1960s, Mrs. Derr was secretary-treasurer of Frederick Federal Savings and Loan Association. From 1964 until 1975, she served as the loan officer for the Frederick office of Loyola Federal Savings and Loan. She retired from Loyola Federal in February 1975 as assistant manager. For over 30 years, she worked faithfully with her husband in six city, county and state political campaigns as his campaign secretary-treasurer.
Active in community and civic affairs, she volunteered for the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. She was very involved in the Frederick Zonta Club and served for many years on the Art in the Park Project. She was an officer of the North Market Street PTA and served as Girl Scout leader.
Mrs. Derr was active in the Republican Party of Frederick County and Maryland. She often worked at the local campaign headquarters and held numerous offices in the Maryland Federation of Republican Women.
She was a long-time member and supporter of the Salvation Army of Frederick and the Homewood Auxiliary.
As a young adult, Mrs. Derr was a member of Christ Reformed Church of Middletown, but became an active member of Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ when she moved to Frederick. There she taught in the Sunday school in the primary department and was active in the Trinity Circle where she served as treasurer for many years. For over 10 years, she worked with several friends on the monthly "Trinity Chimes" newsletter.
