Charles L. "Chuck" Hewitt, 80, of Wilsall, died on Sunday morning, May 30, 1999 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings. Cremation has taken place at Franzen Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in Livingston. Memorial services will be in the funeral home chapel at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 7, with the Rev. David Barnhart of Wilsall Community Church officiating. Graveside committal with military honors and burial of the cremated remains will follow in Wilsall Cemetery.

Mr. Hewitt was born on July l2, 1918 in Harlem, Montana, the son of Lewis L. and Bertha May (Charles) Hewitt. He spent his early life and attended schools in Harlem and Turner, Montana, graduating from high school in Turner. He attended Billings Polytechnic School for about a year. He married Frances A. Jones on September 13, 1941, in Billings. On November 2, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and served with the Corps of Engineers in the South Pacific during WWII. Following his discharge, he returned to Montana and farmed until 1949. In 1950 he became employed as a mail carrier in the rural Wilsall area, a job he held for the next 30 years until his retirement in 1981. He began delivering mail on the Horse Creek route and later transferred to the Sedan route. As a mail carrier he is remembered for his "service with a smile" attitude.

Mr. Hewitt was a member of Park Lodge #140, A.F. & A.M. of Wilsall, Park Post #23 of the American Legion, the 40 et 8 and the Wilsall Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bird watching, picking wild flowers and "cruising" the back roads of the Shields Valley.

His survivors include his son Charles; one stepbrother and three stepsisters; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis L. and Bertha May (Charles) Hewitt; wife Frances A. (Jones) Hewitt in April of 1993 and three sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
