CWO Niall Lyons was raised in Spokane, Washingotn and was a 1988 graduate of Shadle Park High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in Geography from Eastern Washington Univeristy in 1995 and spent three years in the Army before being accepted into the Army Warrant Officer program. He graduated from flight school in 1999.

Niall was a combat veteran with two deployments, one in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the other with Operation Enduring Freedom. On October 26, 2009 while assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) he was killed along with 6 other soldiers in the crash of his MH-47 helicopter.

CWO Lyons's awards include two Air Medals, four Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, two National Defense Service Medals, Iraqi Campaign Medal-Campaign Star, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge and Senior Aviator Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Medal.

He was survived by his eight year old son, his parents, two brothers and a sister.
