Josue was born and raised in the Las Vegas area. He joined the Army in February 2005 and was a combat veteran with six deployments in the war on Terrorism. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Regiment (Airborne), Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. on Oct. 26, 2009 when he died of wounds suffered when the MH-47 helicopter he was aboard crashed in Darreh-ye Bum, Afghanistan.

Sergeant Hernandez-Chavez's awards include two Army Commendation Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal-Campaign Star, the Iraqi Campaign Medal-Campaign Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, two Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbons, the Army Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge, the Basic Aviation Badge, and the Parachutist Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Medal.

He was survived by his parents and two sisters.
