Winston Cecil Highsmith, 81, of Hoboken died Tuesday evening Oct. 26, 2010) at Baptist Village after an extended illness.

He was born in Brantley County to the late John Reyma and Zillie Ocilla Thrift Highsmith.

Mr. Highsmith was raised in Ware County and graduated from Wacona High School. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in the Mediterranean. For a short while, he worked in Washington state picking apples.

He graduated from Georgia State University in Atlanta with a Business Degree and later moved to Delray Beach, Florida. In the early 60's he moved back to the Waycross area where he worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company before working for Morgan Drive-Away for several years. Later he worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company until his retirement.

After retirement, he worked on a part-time basis for South Georgia Investigative Agency and for Waycross College.

Mr. Highsmith was formerly a member of New Hope Advent Christian Church and Life Christian Center for many years where he and his first wife were active in the children's ministry of the church. Most recently, he was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church near Hoboken, GA.

During his school years in Waycross he was a paper boy, delivering papers on his bicycle 38 miles a day. He became interested in flying at a young age beginning with radio controlled airplanes and later flying Ultralights. Mr. Highsmith enjoyed riding his bicycle picking up cans along the road side, watching Auto Racing and religious programs on TV, and listening to country music, especially the Grand Ole Opry. For several years, he volunteered as the bus driver for the Brantley County High School Band while his children were in the band.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death in 1992 of his first wife, Patricia Ann Vaughn Highsmith, which he married in 1958; an infant daughter, Lori Anne Highsmith; three brothers, Eli Highsmith, Edmund "Buddy" Highsmith and Harvey Highsmith.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva H. McClain Highsmith, whom he married in 1996; four children, Dr. Donna Loy McClain and her husband Truman, Blackshear, Cathy Barnes and her husband, Pastor Lee, Hahira, Lt Col Simeon Highsmith and his wife Cara, Warner Robins, GA, Wally Highsmith and his wife Lida, Cumming, GA; 12 grandchildren, Emily, Caroline and Elizabeth McClain, all of Blackshear, Caleb, Jesse, Abigail, and Faith Barnes, all of Hahira, Jordan, Ciara and Chelsea Highsmith, all of Warner Robins, GA, PFC Aaron Highsmith, Kuwait, Stephanie Simmerman, Athens; step-children, Kathy Regan and her husband Tim, Tampa, FL, Pastor Jeff Howell and his wife Tina, Plant City, FL, Greg Howell and his wife Lori, Valrico, FL; 10 step-grandchildren, Matt and Ryan Regan, Tampa, FL, Autumn, Tori, Noah, Sara Grace, Josiah, and Judah Howell, all of Plant City, FL, Nathan and Caleb Howell, both of Valrico, FL; one step great grandchild, Chaste Duval; four sisters, Josephine Jolley and her husband Bill, Brunswick, Myrna Sullivan and her husband Hauk, Hampton, GA, Lyndall Howard, Atkinson, Laverne Butler, Atkinson; five brothers, Florenz Highsmith and his wife Betty Carol, Waycross, Wesley Highsmith and his wife Carol, Waycross, Lesley Highsmith and his wife Myrtie, Waycross, Ronnie Thrift and his wife Jan, Waycross, Mike Highsmith and his wife Cindy, Panama City, FL; two sisters-in-law, Vertie Lee Highsmith, Waycross, Elisabeth Highsmith, Leesville, Louisiana; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.

A funeral service will be held Friday morning at 11 am at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Hoboken. Burial will follow in Thomas Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the funeral home.
