Private, Company C, 7th US Cavalry. Killed in action at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, along with General George A. Custer and most of the 7th Cavalry.

He enlisted on 2 Oct 1873 in New York City, listing his previous occupation as a Farmer. He was 5 feet, 7 inches tall, with blue eyes, brown hair, and a black complexion. He was not married. During the Battle of the Little Big Horn, his unit was with Custer's column, which was wiped out. His mother, Phoebe C. Van Allen, later remarried and took the name Niver, which has often been listed as his last name. On a monument in Elmwood Cemetery in Bethleham, NY, is the inscription "Gerrit H. Niver, Killed in the Custer Massacre on the Little Big Horn, Dakota, June 25, 1876, aged 30 years, 4 mos, 25 days." Originally buried where they fell, the bodies were reinterred in 1877 into a mass grave at the top of Last Stand Hill.
