CONNEAUT — Shirley Louise Reger McCroskey, age 86, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at The Villa At The Lake, where she made her home since January, 2010.

She was born Oct. 23, 1923, in Conneaut, Ohio to Rhaul K. and Adelaide D. Reger. During the Great Depression, her father purchased a farm in Monroe Township. She attended the one-room Howard School for 4th through 8th grades and rode the only area school bus at the time. Shirley graduated from Conneaut High School and attended Kent State University in Kent, Ohio for two years.

Shirley married George W. McCroskey while he was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II and they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary prior to George's passing in 2008. She was a homemaker until her children entered high school and then worked as a part-time bookkeeper for Stateline Truck Stop and Ramada Inn of Conneaut.

From age 57 to 62, she was employed by Worldwide Auto Parts in Conneaut and Jefferson. Upon retirement, Shirley and George wintered in North Port, Fla. for 15 years. Shirley was also a Red Cross Volunteer at Brown Memorial Hospital and received her 25-year service pin.

Shirley was a 57-year member of East Conneaut United Methodist Church (now New Leaf UMC), holding several offices in finance. She and George were active in the Christian Family Class. She was also a long time member of the East Conneaut Child Conservation League. Other interests included reading, sewing and knitting. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and made each of her grandchildren a handmade quilt.

Mrs. McCroskey is survived by her daughters, Margery (Robert) Wheeler of Ashtabula and Sally McCroskey of Conneaut; son, Richard (Mariana) McCroskey of Key Biscayne, Fla.; brother, Philip (Sue) Reger of Hilliard, Ohio; four grandchildren, Dawn Wheeler of Paducah, Ky., Cheryl (Paul) Hill of Willoughby, Ohio, Jeffrey (Pamela) Root of Boise, Idaho and Gretchen (Christopher) Joslin of Conneaut; seven great-grandchildren, Paul Griffin Jr., Tiffany Hill, Corey Hill, Riley Joslin, Katherine Joslin, Connor Wood and Trevor Wood; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Jack; and her husband, George.

Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m., TODAY, Oct. 19th, at MARCY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, Ohio, with Pastor Jan Walsh, of New Leaf United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the Service, TODAY, at the Funeral Home.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Cleveland, Ohio 44119-1330. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
