Private, Company L, 7th US Cavalry. Killed in action on Last Stand Hill, along with General George A. Custer and most of the 7th Cavalry, during the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

He arrived in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania from Germany in 1869, and enlisted in the US Army on 4 Oct 1875, listing his previous occupation as Cigar Maker. He was sent to the St. Louis Cavalry Depot, and then to Fort Totten, North Dakota, where he joined up with the 7th Cavalry. He was 5 feet, 9 1/4 inches tall, with blue eyes, blonde hair, and a fair complexion. The 1876 Sioux Campaign was his first action, and he was with Custer's column when they attacked the Indian village, where he was killed in action. After the battle, the men were first buried where they fell (grave markers now mark the spots where the bodies were found), and in 1877, the bodies were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill. He was not married. His mother, Anna Katharina Vetter, received a pension of $8 per month, until her death on 4 Dec 1887. Letters to his brother in Germany are in the North Dakota Historical Society Library in Bismarck, ND.
