In a bizarre accident, a 25-year-old Southfield woman was killed Friday on M-39 in Detroit when tires flew off a semi-truck and struck her car.
Ashley Thomas, a University of Michigan student, was headed north in the center lane near Curtis at about 2:30 p.m. when the axle of a gas tanker that was traveling in the opposite direction broke, detaching dual affixed tires. The tires hit another semi-tractor trailer before bouncing over the cement median and striking Thomas' car.
Ypsilanti-based Sloan Petroleum Transportation owns the semi-truck and may face charges pending the outcome of a continuing investigation by Michigan State Police to determine the cause of the equipment failure.
Police have not released the make and model of Thomas' vehicle.
