Lemuel Smith was the son of Charles Smith (1731-1757) and Elizabeth Ann Patsy Pryor (1735-1797). After the death of his father, Elizabeth married Matthew Flournoy, who became Lemuel’s guardian. Lemuel’s siblings were John Pryor Smith (1754-1823) and Margaret Peggy Smith (1757-1823). He also had several half siblings. In 1778, Lemuel married Bethunia Perkins (1763-1845) who was the daughter of Col Peter Perkins and his wife Agnes Wilson Perkins. Lemuel served as a Captain in the Pittsylvania County Virginia Militia under the command of his father-in-law, Col Perkins. He transported prisoners of war, furnished supplies, and paid the 1783 supply tax which supported the war effort. Lemuel Smith is a verified DAR patriot (A213494) based on these services. After the war, Lemuel and his family moved to North Carolina. In 1784, the NC General Assembly appointed Lemuel as a trustee to oversee “extending the navigation of the Roanoke River” by supervising the clearing of the river. Lemuel served as a Justice of the Peace in Chatham County in 1795 and 1796, and he was elected to the North Carolina Senate in 1796 and 1801.
