Robert E. Ross, former president of Ross Abattoir and local golf champion, died 11:40 a.m. Thursday in Heartland of Springfield. He was 78.
His wife, H. Virginia Ross, said he died from the effects of a massive stroke he suffered Feb. 20.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Chris Conrad of Springfield; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Dianne Ross Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri, Richard and Rosann Ross of Coral Springs, Florida and Randall and Kay Ross of Washburn, Wisconsin, eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ross was a life-long Springfield resident. He attended Springfield High School and graduated from Graham High School in St. Paris. He later attended the Ohio State University.
After operating the Ross Abattoir, a slaughter-house at 2110 W. Jefferson St., for 47 years, Ross closed the company in 1980 to retire, Mrs. Ross said.
Ross was an avid golfer, winning three Springfield city championships, several state amateur titles and eight Springfield Country Club championships during the 1940's and 1950's.
Mrs. Ross said he played golf daily during the couple's visit to Florida this past December and January.
He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, and Springfield Country Club, the Goda Club, St. Andrews Masonic Lodge 619, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton and Antioch Shrine.
Private services will be conducted Monday at the Austin Richards and Raff Memorial Home at the convenience of the family. However, friends may call there from 5-8 p.m. Sunday.
