All of La Salle County was saddened Wednesday morning, when it was learned that A.U. "Dutch" Knaggs, genial County Clerk for over 20 years, had passed away. Dutch had been in ill health for several months, but his condition became more serious about three weeks ago, at which time he was taken to a hospital in San Antonio for treatment. He continued to improve and was brought home last Saturday. His condition continued to improve, and Tuesday evening he sat out in the year and talked with his family. However, about 2 o'clock Wednesday morning, he suffered a stroke and passed away around 9 o'clock. The deceased was born in Cotulla on December 12, 1892, and had made his home here his entire life. he was a member of a pioneer family, which had lived in this section for more than 60 years. He was married to Miss Samantha Murphy on May 23, 1930. To this union was born two children, Albert Urban, Jr. and John Ryan. Dutch had served as County Clerk of La Salle County since the death of his father on June 13, 1919. In this capacity, he has served the county well, and has made a fine reputation as an honest and efficient public servant. He was always ready, willing and anxious to help with any worthwhile cause, and he had a fine reputation for being a helpful and dependable friend. For this reason, Dutch probably had as many friends, both among the American and the Mexicans as any one man in La Salle County. For the past three years, he had been a director of the Cotulla Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Cotulla Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. In addition to his wife and two children, above named, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Carrie M. Knaggs; three brothers, George S. and R.F. both of Cotulla and Arthur J. of Carrizo Springs; and three sisters Mrs. Katherine Smith of Austin, Mrs. Lee Peters and Mrs. J.H. Vesper both of Cotulla. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon from the Methodist Church, with Rev. J.W. Leggitt officiating an being assisted by Rev. H.W. Hamilton. Interment was in the Cotulla Cemetery.
