Norman Audry Strader, born July 31, 1909, in Charleston Twp, passed away at the age of 89 on Saturday May 29, 1999, at Carle Hospital in Urbana.

Visitation took place on Wed, June 2 from 5:00 PM. to 8:00 PM. at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home. Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Pat Murphy, were held on Thur, June 3, also at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home. Burial was at Enon Cemetery, in Ashmore Twp.

Mr. Strader is survived by one daughter, Sharon Sue Strader Hubbard of Champaign, IL. Sharon is the daughter of his 46 year marriage to his now deceased (1981) wife Beulah C. Hammond Strader, originally of Martinsville, IL.

Norman is also survived by his present wife of almost 9 years, Dorothy M. Strader, and one brother, William J. Strader of Ashmore Township. He was preceded in death by his parents William H. Strader & Molly O. Drum and one sister Madeline Pearl Haddock of Charleston.

Having received a Bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University and a Master's degree from the University of Illinois, Mr. Strader taught school a total of 42 years. He taught at Charleston High School a total of 25 years, primarily in physics and advanced mathematics.

He taught at Eastern Illinois University for a total of approximately 4 years in the Physics, Math, and Audio-Visual Departments.

After spending his first 2 years as a teacher in the Charleston country schools, he taught 6 years in Livingston, IL. and year at Martinsville, IL. before being offered a position at EIU.

The year 1950-1951 was spent as assistant principal at Charleston High School before becoming a full time teacher, which he loved.

Mr. Strader was also the Audio--Visual director for the Charleston school system for a number of years and taught Driver's Ed. for 7 years, followed by teaching 55 Alive to senior citizens after his retirement from teaching school.

During World War II, Mr. Strader taught radio repair to soldiers at Scott Field. Later on, he worked part time at WEIC's radio station as an engineer and announcer for a period of 10 years.

Originally a member of Enon Baptist Church in Ashmore Twp, Norman was currently a member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston, IL and spent a number of years teaching Sunday School classes at two different churches.

Norm Strader was loved and admired by many and will be greatly missed.
