Joy Gifford passed away at her home on October 20, 2010.

Joy Eleanor Gifford was born in Saint Louis, Missouri, October 12, 1925, to Jule Kuring and A. Wallace Gifford. She attended Ward Belmont College and Washington University in Saint Louis, graduating in 1948 with a degree in psychology and a minor in English. Joy met the love of her life at Thanksgiving breakfast in 1946, and on August 16, 1947, married Frank Louis Wolf of Webster Groves, Missouri, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
At first, Joy and Frank lived in Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where Frank taught math at Saint Cloud State and their first child, Joan Lisabeth, was born. In 1952, Joy and Frank moved to Northfield where Frank became a math professor at Carleton College, and three more children--Joy Allison, Barbara Helen and Jonathan Gifford-- came along. Although they later joked they intended to stay "a year or two", Joy and Frank enjoyed being part of the Carleton and Northfield communities for several decades.
Other than her family and friends, Joy's greatest love was books. She was Director of the Cannon Falls library and held various library positions with the Northfield and Carleton libraries. Joy's laughter and proclivity for exuberant conversation contrasted with librarian stereotypes. Far from being focused on a quiet library and books returned on time, Joy wanted the books off the shelves and in the hands of enthusiastic readers. Active with the American Library Association, SELCO, and the Intellectual Freedom Committee of the Minnesota Library Association, Joy was, at the time of her death, the volunteer librarian for her residence at 1000 Cannon Valley Drive, and had just been elected to the governing Board.
Joy and Frank were among those who founded the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Northfield, which became a spiritual home for many. Joy was chairman of the Board of the Prairie Foods Coop, and a member of the League of Women Voters, the Northfield Historical Society, and the Northfield Arts Guild. Joy's intellectual side was nurtured by membership in the Margaret Evans Huntington Study Club, of which she was a member at her death. She excelled at word games, crossword puzzles and card games and was a member of a longstanding bridge club. She enjoyed traveling, particularly her trips to England, Wales, Greece, Arizona and Alaska.
Joy reveled in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, often supplying just the right book at just the right time. She was a willing babysitter and had a special love for infants. She enjoyed hosting large and small family gatherings, including a large family reunion at Old Orchard, the family's lake place, in 2009.

Survivors include daughters Joan (Paul) Prefontaine, Allison Wolf (Jerry Wilhelm), Barbara (Donald) Terao; son Jon Gifford Wolf; grandchildren Shawn Wolf Bundy, Stephanie and Emily Terao, and Claire and Eliot Wilhelm; great-granddaughters Morgan and Kieran Bonds; brother-in-law, Bryant Wolf; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
