Mrs. Howard, then Mary DeLong, the daughter of Elias DeLong, a Frenchman, helped her father make shoes for the Confederate Army. Yankee troops on arrival at Tuscaloosa raided her family home.
The DeLongs settled in Hunt County on coming to Texas, and in 1870 she married the late Henry Howard at Campbell, Hunt County. Mr. Howard was in the general mercantile business. Later, they went to Cumby, Hopkins County, where they lived until coming to Dallas twenty-one years ago.
Mrs. Howard was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church and retained her membership in the church at Cumby.
Surviving are three grandchildren, Mrs. Slade and Ben H. Mercer of Dallas and L. D. Mercer of Los Angeles, Calif.
The Rev. W. H. Wynn will conduct funeral services in the chapel of the Guardian Funeral Home at 10 a. m. Saturday and burial will follow later in the day at Cumby.
