Philander Smith, Sr., Rites Are Held Here
Philander E. Smith, of Central, 78-year-old father of Philander E. Smith Jr., police juror, died yesterday morning at 8 o'clock in the Baton Rouge General hospital after a short illness.
The body was at the Adams funeral home until 3 p.m. yesterday, with funeral services held at the Zoar Baptist Church at 4 p.m., the Rev. L. L. Hanson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ernest Chandler. Burial was in the church cemtery.
Surviving Mr. Smith are his widow, eight children, Mrs. H. D. Ashford, Mrs. L. E. Watts, Frank Smith, David L. Smith, John B. Smith, Philander E. Smith Jr., and Ramie Smith, all of this parish; 28 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He left 49 direct descendants.
