He enlisted in Company G of the 6th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry on 24 Sep 1861 at Golconda, Pope Co., IL. He was mustered in 19 Nov 1861 at Camp Butler near Springfield, IL. They were moved to Shawneetown, IL on 25 Nov 1861 and camped until Feb of 1862 when they moved to Paducah, KY.
He was listed as a deserter, but later cleared (12 Sep 1885) under Act of Congress 5 Jul 1884. He received a pension for disability from kidney and neuralgia contracted at Germantown, TN in 1863 and received treatment at a hospital in La Grange, TN.
