Johann Herman Heinrich Friedrich Otteman was born in the parish of Bucken, in the province of Hanover, Germany, the 13th of June, 1867. In the same year, July 13th, he was baptized in the Lutheran faith, a faith which guided and sustained him the rest of his life. He came to this country September 25, 1882, and made his temporary residence in Beloit, Wisconsin. Six months later, he came to the vicinity of Albert City where he lived and labored the rest of his life.

On April 12, 1891, he was united in marriage to Marie Lehmkuhl. This marriage was blessed with three children: Henry, Louis and Hilda. On November 3, 1923, his wife was taken from him by death and his daughter, Hilda, took over the duties of maintaining the home.

About four months ago, it became apparent that his earthly pilgrimage was drawing to a close. Through a paralytic stroke, the God of grace and mercy, gave him a reminder to set his house in order and to prepare to leave for the far journey. At this time he called for his pastor and for the administration of the means of grace. It was a blessed experience for him to receive the holy sacrament and to hear the comfort and admonition of the word of God. The regular weekly devotions were an anticipated pleasure to him as well as to his pastor who found such a hunger in a human soul for the bread of life.

He departed this earthy life at the age of 75 years, 43 months and 4 days. He leaves to mourn his departure, his three children, Henry, Lou and Hilda; four grandchildren; one brother, Ehler; and a large host of relatives and friends.
