"Cave-in Brings Instant Death to Two Miners
Funeral services for both of the victims of the cave-in at the Spruce underground mine last Friday, Anton Korcha, 53, and Frank M. Putzel, 43, were held on Wednesday and this Thursday morning, with interment in the local cemetery.
Korcha, whose rites were held on Wednesday, is survived by his wife Anne, and two daughters, Patricia and Delores, both at home; his father, Joseph , in Yugoslavia; one brother and two sisters in Yugoslavia. He had been a resident of Eveleth for the past 30 years. He was a member of the KSKJ Lodge No. 59, SNPJ Lodge No. 69, Yugoslav Club No. 1. Funeral services were at the Graham FUneral Home at 8 a.m. at the Holy Family church, Rev. Fr. A. L. Pirnat officiating.
Putzel, whose funeral was held this Thursday morning with military rites by the American Legion and VFW, is survived by his wife, Leone; his mother, Mrs. Mary Putzel, Hibbing; three brothers, Louis and WIlliam, Hibbing, John of Bethel, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. J. C. King, Bethel, Ohio . Mr. Putzel, a World War ii veteran, served four and one-half years in the Panama area. He was a member of the United Steelworkers of America, (CIO). Services were at 8:30 a.m. at the Graham FUneral Home, and at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic church with Rev. Fr. Henry Spain officiating.
Ever since the two Eveleth miners were entombed by a cave-in, 400 feet below the survace in the Spruce underground mine last Friday at about 1 p.m., rescue work under direction of William J. Kaiser, district superintendent of the OIM Co. Eastern district, has been carried on round the clock. He states his company is planning a complete investigation of the cave-in.
The body of Anton Korcha was uncovered and brought to the surface about 1:30 a.m. Monday morning, while that of Frank Putzel was brought to the surface at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday. The two men were trapped near the end of a 40-foot tunnel where they were digging ore.
Rescue workers at first had hopes the two men were trapped in a tunnel beyond the cave-in area. When the body of Korcha was found, hope faded on getting Putzel out alive. Dr. F. R. Kotchevar stated that death came instantly to the two men and no inquests were held.
It was one of the worst mining disasters in recent history. During the rescue work, mining in the area was conducted on a limited basis."
