An Honored and Respected Citizen Passes Away– Funeral Sunday
David R. Hammel, a resident of Canton since 1857 died at 10:20 o'clock Thursday night at the residence of his son, Newton Hammel, 357 West Olive Street.
Mr. Hammel, who was honored and respected by his many friends, was born in Pennsylvania in June 1811. In 1841 he married Miss Elizabeth Moore of his home town. Seven children were born to them during their residence in Pennsylvania. Of the seven children four are living. They are William of Kansas, David of Bushnell, Newton of this city and Jacob whose present location is not known. Mrs. Joseph Drake, a daughter, died four years ago. Mr. Hammel, wife and family came to Canton early in the 50's but did not remain long. They moved back to their home in the East and in 1857 returned to Canton to make their home.
Mrs. Hammel died 18 years ago and for the past 14 years Mr. Hammel has resided with his son Newton and wife. He was never a member of any church but during his lifetime attended the Baptist Church.
Three weeks ago he was taken ill and was confined to his bed until death relieved him. The funeral will be held Sunday at 2:30 o'clock PM from his late home, the Rev. Alex Smith officiating. The interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs David Hammel of Bushnell will attend the funeral.
