The brigantine "Mary Celeste" was lost with all hands, including her, her husband, Captain Benjamin S. Briggs (1835-1872), and their daughter Sophia (1870-1872), in November 1872. The empty ship was located half way between the Azore Islands and the coast of Portugal on December 4, 1872. A cenotaph stands in the Evergreen Cemetery, Marion, Massachusetts, in memory of her, her husband, and their daughter, "Lost in Brig Mary Celeste." For a complete history on this event, see GHOST SHIP: THE MYSTERIOUS TRUE STORY OF THE MARY CELESTE AND HER MISSING CREW by Brian Hicks (New York: Ballantine Books, 2004).
Find a Grave conributor G. Abbott stated that Sarah Briggs also had a son Arthur, age 7, who was left at home.
