Congressmen. Born in Piedmont, Alabama, he graduated from the University of Alabama Law School in 1935, was admitted to the bar in 1936 and commenced the practice of law in Anniston, Alabama. He was a member of the Alabama State Senate in 1942, when he enlisted in the US Navy and served as an Lieutenant Commander during World War II. After the war, he was president of the Piedmont Development Company (1945-50), member of the Alabama State Board of Veterans Affairs and city attorney of Piedmont, (1948-50). In 1951, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-second Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1965. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a counsel on the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission (1965-72), a member of the National Highway Safety Advisory Committee (1966-70) and practice d law until his retirement in 1979. He died at age 76 of heart failure in Potomac, Maryland.
