Herbert M. Simmons, 84, of 2215 W. Phoenix died Monday at a local hospital.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Charles Olsen will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 3-9 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Heart Fund.

Mr. Simmons was born July 1, 1898 on a farm in the Buffalo Grove area northwest of Lexington. He was the son of Frederick and Matilda Cross Simmons. He grew up and received his education in the Lexington area.

He married Mary Thayer on Sept. 1, 1921. He farmed in the Buffalo Grove area until 1922 when he moved to Grand Island. He had worked for construction companies in the Grand Island area.

In October 1942 he entered the U. S. Army, serving until May 1944. He returned to Grand Island and worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition plant until the war's end. He then went to work for Norden Laboratories until 1958 when he returned to operate the family farm. He retired in 1973.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a sister, Helen Simmons of Grand Island; two sons, LeRoy of Torrance, Calif., and Neil of La Palma, Calif., seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Simmons of Burnsville, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence, and two sisters, Florence Harrison and Ella Kampfe.

He and Mary divorced in early 1930's. She married Ralph Stanley in Dec. of 1936, and she died Sept. 1989 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
