LAS VEGAS - Sally Ann (Balderson) Stoneman, 73, formerly of Long Creek, died Sept. 13, 2010, in Las Vegas. She had battled multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone, since September 2004.
Services were held Sept. 18 in Las Vegas. A Celebration of Life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Long Creek.
Mrs. Stoneman was born April 23, 1937, in Vancouver, Wash., to Loren Ellis and Margaret (McCarthy) Balderson. Growing up in Hamilton, she and her siblings traveled to and from school by horse from their family homestead.
During World War II, she was a foster daughter to Paul and Harvey Swan of Vancouver, Wash. Returning to the Long Creek area, she attended Long Creek High School, and then St. Mary's Academy in Portland.
On Aug. 22, 1954, she married local logger, Royal Mahlon Stoneman on the lawn of Long Creek High School. The couple lived in the John Day area before moving to other areas in the Pacific Northwest.
She began working at Montgomery Ward in Portland in the late 1960s, then J.C. Penney for 20 years. Since 1990 she worked as a cashier and order taker with The Mirage in Las Vegas. She received many honors, commendations and an "employee of the month" award. Her retirement was celebrated two weeks prior to her death.
She enjoyed simple things: the outdoors, sight-seeing and camping around Oregon with family. She was an avid reader and loved roses, which she grew every year while living in Troutdale and Gresham.
She enjoyed traveling, too; a solo trip included Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Virginia. She also traveled with a former co-worker, Patty La Cross. Together they covered thousands of miles throughout the United States and Canada.
Survivors include her brother, James Balderson of Sandy and Long Creek; sister, Caroline Zabreznik of Tonasket, Wash.; daughters, Rebecca Muck of Vancouver, Wash., and Laurie Patterson of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Arinda and Corbin Muck, and Shawntel Patterson; longtime friend and companion, Dean Roberson of Las Vegas; six stepgrandsons; one stepgranddaughter; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Michael.
