Rt. Rev. Msgr. John Baptist Gleissner

John Baptist Gleissner was born on October 31, 1865 in Burgkunstadt, Bavaria, Germany, the youngest of six children of Frank and Carolina (Plats) Gleissner. In 1886, he graduated with honors, at the age of 21, from Steyl College located near Venlo, Netherlands, on the Maas River.

John Gleissner came to America in 1888 and entered the Seminary of Our Lady of the Angels, at Niagra Falls, New York. In May of 1889, he was called by Bishop Gallagher of Galveston, Texas. He was ordained at St. Mary's Cathedral in Galveston by Most Reverend N. A. Gallagher on July 10, 1889, for the southern diocese of Galveston. His first assignment was at St. Martin's Catholic Church in St. Martinsville, now know as Tours, Texas. He arrived there on July 26, 1889. One year after his arrival, with the help of his parishioners, he built a parochial school. The Sisters of Divine Providence accepted the invitation to teach.

When a new church, Church of the Assumption, was constructed in West, Texas in 1892, Rev. John Gleissner served as first pastor of that parish, in addition to his duties at St. Martin's in Tours. (This original wooden structure was destroyed by fire in March of 1903, and replaced with a brick building that same year.)

After 7 ½ years at Tours, in 1896 Rev. Gleissner was sent to St. Mary's Church in Hearne and the numerous missions attached, where he spent the next 7 ½ years. Under his guidance, St. Mary's Chapel was built in Calvert, a parochial school at Rockdale, and the priests' residence at Caldwell.

Next Bishop Gallagher appointed Rev. Gleissner to be pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Bryan in 1904. It was to be a temporary assignment, but it lasted almost fifty years. Father Gleissner served the Catholic community of Brazos County and Texas A & M University for 49 years, from 1904 - 1953.

In 1926, Father Gleissner was responsible for the construction and dedication of St. Mary's Chapel at Texas A&M University for his beloved Catholic Aggies, which remained a Mission of St. Joseph's Parish until the 1960's. The cornerstone was laid on the Feast of the Holy Family on January 9, 1927. The inscription read: "St. Mary's Chapel, erected by the State Council of the Knights of Columbus of Texas, A.D. 1927." For years to come, Father Gleissner appeared at every Knights of Columbus convention to give an account of the achievements of the A&M chapel and to assure them of the value of their investment.

Because of his tireless ministry, Father Gleissner was granted the title of Monsignor in 1931.

Rt. Rev. Msgr. John Baptist Gleissner died on Saturday, February 28, 1953. He was laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Bryan, Texas.
