Kathy Weaver and I (Kent Kooi) have been researching the men of the 4th Iowa Cavalry for a little more than a year now, and have some additional information for his bio:
Justin W. Allen was 28, and living in Delhi, Delaware Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. B of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept 2, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 23, 1861.
Allen was officially discharged from the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct 20, 1862, in accordance with a War Dept. Order to discontinue the regimental bands.
Prior to his official discharge from the 4th Iowa Cavalry, Allen took up residence in Exeter, Wisconsin, and there enlisted as a Private in Co. F of the 31st Wisconsin Infantry on Aug 15, 1862. On Jan 12, 1863, he transferred from Co. F to Co. I.
On Feb 21, 1865, Allen was discharged from the 31st Wisconsin Infantry, and commissioned as the 2nd Lieutenant of Co. B of the 50th Wisconsin Infantry. He was promoted to Captain on April 14, 1866, and then mustered out of the service on June 12, 1866.
Allen applied for his Civil War pension on July 30, 1883. His application is #491,177, and his certificate #527,057.
