He was court-martialed and placed in confinement at Fort Barrancas, Florida, until his return to Fort Abraham Lincoln, ND, on 1 Sept 1876. On 12 July 1880, he was discharged as a Sergeant of excellent character, and he enlisted on 12 August 1880 into the US Marine Corps as a Private, at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, NY. He served as a Marine until his discharge on 11 August 1885. He moved to Washington DC, where he married Mary Hoskins in 1896. He was admitted to the Government Hospital for the Insane, Washington DC, on 10 April 1914, and died in the hospital six months later. Cause of death was listed as cerebral lues. His body was cremated.
