The son of Henry and Christina Gehrmann, both parents born in Germany, he enlisted on 13 March 1876 into Company B, 7th US Cavalry. At his enlistment, he listed his previous occupation as Laborer. Discharged on 12 March 1881, at Fort Yates, ND. He enlisted on 2 April 1881 into Battery C, 2nd US Artillery, and was promoted to Sergeant just before his discharge on 1 April 1886. He moved to Washington DC, where he was a policeman, and later, a watchman at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. He resided at 321 Lenworth Place SW, Washington DC. His wife Mary, died on 12 Jan 1910, in Washington DC; they had 4 children: Harry A. (born 5 July 1887), Frederick (born 29 Oct 1889), Charles A. (born 12 April 1891), and Marie C. (born 13 May 1894). He remarried, on 13 Sept 1916, to Geneva B. (last name unknown), and they had one son: Henry. Cause of death was diabetes mellitis. His widow died on 22 January 1934.
