Harold was born Harold Leroy Gill to Vernon Harold Gill and Florence Esther Wetzel Gill in Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota on April 12, 1924. Harold’s sister, Betty Louise, was born in 1926. Florence separated from Vernon and married Thomas Henry Bergren in August 1933. Between 1935 and 1940 the Bergren family moved from Morehead, Clay County, Minnesota to Lakeview Township, Becker County, Minnesota where they had a farm. The family then moved to Washington State to work for the war effort after the outbreak of World War II.
Harold married Virginia May Bertoldi and lived in Puyallup, Washington. Virginia brought with her two sons, Jerry L. (Wollas) and Carl H. (Essman), from her two previous marriages. Harold and Virginia, known familiarly as Doc and Genie, had a son, Christopher J., in 1951. Doc continued work in the military industry at the Mount Rainier Ordnance Depot. At home he built a large three-bay open garage where he worked on an ever-growing number of automobiles. This new Bergren family loved the open road and went driving and camping whenever the chance arose.
Genie passed away in July, 1961. Soon after, the Mount Rainier Depot was closed and Harold was given a chance to transfer to the Tooele Army Depot in Utah. Harold married Lorraine Whitworth and, together with her five children from a previous marriage (Gary, Douglas, Kristie, Patricia and Colleen), moved to Utah in 1962.
Harold separated in 1969 and married Betty Baker in Elko, Nevada, on May 11, 1971. Betty had four children from a previous marriage (Larry, Marty, Terrel, and Randy). This new Bergren family lived in Minnesota briefly before returning to southern Utah. Harold traveled with Betty to Monroe, Michigan, to visit his grandsons in 1982. Harold passed away on April 20, 1985.
One could say that Harold, like Thomas, stepped in and did the work that other men would not or could not do. They worked, kept a roof over the heads of many, and did it their way.
