OBITUARY

THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT
Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, October 3, 1991

BENNETT - Hazel Ann Bennett, daughter of A. C. and Ada Kells Dixon was born in Wayne County on Oct. 30, 1899. She passed away at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines on Sept. 20, 1991, at the age of 91 years.

Hazel graduated from Russell High School in 1920 and then taught in rural schools in the area for a time. She spent most of her life in Lucas County.

Hazel was united in marriage to Merle R. Bennett on May 20, 1923. One daughter, Leanna, blessed their home. In 1939, they moved to their farm south of Russell, in Wayne County. After the death of her husband in 1957, Hazel operated the farm for six years, before moving into Russell to make her home.

Because of failing eyesight, Hazel lived the last few years of her life in the home of her sister, Vera Clanin, in Russell.

Hazel was a member of the Christian Church, and attended Center Community Church south of Russell for many years. She was a member of the TNT club for more than 60 years. She was a charter member of the Russell American Legion Auxillary for more than 65 years. She attended church and club meetings faithfully until just the last few weeks.

Those preceding Hazel in death were her husband, Merle R. Bennett; her parents, A. C. and Ada Dixon; and two brothers, Howard Dixon of Moline, Ill. and Allen Dixon of Russell.

Hazel is survived by her daughter Ada Leanna Wardlow and husband Dwain of Oxnard, Calif.; her sister, Vera Clanin of Russell; her grandchildren, Lucinda Ann Salzman and husband Randy of Bay City, Texas, Mary Beth Kunihiro and husband Gary of Aeia, Hawaii, Robert Wardlow of Oxnard, Calif., and Charlotte Vega and husband James of Murietta, Calif. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

Services for Hazel were held at Fielding Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 24, with Pastor Charles Husted from Center Community Church. Music was provided by Margaret Phippen. Pallbearers were Robert Allen, Kenneth Collins, Harold Rasmus, Bill Morse, Phillip Shenefield and Paul Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Albert Cochran and Perry Sellers. Interment was in the Russell Cemetery.
