Royalty, french crown princess. Born the third daughter of Robert II and Agnes de France, and sister of Jeanne de Bourgogne. She married Louis of France, oldest son of Philipp IV and Queen Jeanne I of Navarra in September 1305 in Vernon. In 1312 she gave birth to a daughter, Jeanne, who will later succeed her father in Navarra. After the birth she began an affair with Gauthier d'Aulnay that lasted for three years. The affair was discovered in 1314 and Philipp IV ordered the two d'Aulnay brothers and his three daughters-in-law to be arrested. Pierre and Gauthier were tortured, admitted the affairs and were executed in Pontoise a short time later. Marguerite and Blanche were imprisoned at the Chateau Gaillard, an old fortress build by Richard I of England. When her father in law died she hoped to be freed soon because her husband was now king. But in the years of her imprisonment Louis had already looked for a new wife and had chosen Clemence de Hongrie. In August 1315 Marguerite was found dead in her cell. It's not clear whether she was strangled or died of pneumonia, but her death was very fortunate for Louis who married Clemence only five days later.
