Frederick "Fred" Leon Bedford was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 29, 1889, but moved to Tacoma, Washington with his parents Charles N. and Marian (Cochran) Bedford before 1910. According to his passport application in 1914, Fred Bedford was working as a cook aboard the HMHS (His Majesty's Hospital Ship) "Wandilla," whose home port was Liverpool, England and was single at the time. Fred appeared to be a cook throughout his life. He served as Seargent in the US Army during World War I. Sometime around 1921 he appears to have met Bertha Marie (Johnson) Finnesgard, a fellow Minnesota native with whom he lived for a number of years before getting married. According to census records, they lived in Seattle for a time period, before settling in Tacoma, Washington for the majority of their adult life. They had no children from their union.
