Her parents were Ralph A. Newman and Mary (Polly) Edwards. Some researchers say her full name was Sarah Elizabeth, but that seems to be an error, as there are no records I have found that give her any name besides Elizabeth, and the 1850 census shows an older sister Sarah. Elizabeth did have a daughter named Sarah Elizabeth who died young.
