Daughter of John McMurtrie Jr. (1832-1884) and Janet Gray (1833-1882). Their children were born in Scotland, some were born in Glasgow, some in Ayrshire and most all in Greenock. Marion is twin to her brother Matthew McMurtrie (1864-1864).

And as the family story goes...Marion's mother Janet Gray died in Greenock, Scotland leaving Marion's father John McMurtrie with the raising and care of this large family of 10 children. He became despondent after a time and his health began to fail him. He desided to take his family to America. They were to set sail from Liverpool, Scotland on the ship "Wisconsin" in 1885. When the passengers on the sailing list were checked, the father was not to be found. A search was made and John McMurtrie was found lying across his wife's grave dead. His family were orphans, going to a strange land without support or finace to see them through after their arrival.

Among the passengers and listed with this family was an Uncle Robert Gray, a brother to their mother Janet. He had lost his wife in death some years before. It was this Uncle Robert that came to the rescue of the orphaned children of John Mc Murtrie and Janet Gray and brought them on to America via the ship "Nevada".

Robert married the oldest female child of that family, Marion Dunn Mc Murtrie on 23 Mar 1887 in St. George, Washington County, Utah.

As some of Marion's brothers and sisters grew older, Marion and Robert had a large family of their own. Several of their own children died in childhood and only four lived to reach maturity. Marion had a daughter Cambellina who died when she was fifteen years old.
