Aviation Cadet T. A. Austin, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #5291 in 1937. Entered active service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program. Was released from active duty in 1940.

Flew for American Airlines from 1940 to 1974 in addition to serving 23 years in the Naval Reserves, retiring in 1961 with rank of Captain.

Travis married Doris Dial on 11 November 1937 in Camden, Camden County, New Jersey. After living in several places during the time of his military service, they moved to Fort Worth, Tarrent County, Texas where they lived until their deaths. They were parents of two children, Jack Raymond Hinson and Joy Hinson.

He died November 6, 2004.
