Devoted wife of Major General Henry Ware Lawton.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, she married Henry Lawton on 6 December 1881. A devoted Army wife, she insisted on following her husband wherever he went to serve. She was devastated by his death in battle in December 1899, and continued to wear mourning black clothing for the remainder of her life. Upon her return from the Philippines in 1900, she lived in Louisville for about a year, then purchased a house where she lived until 1911, then moved to Annapolis, Maryland, where she died in 1934. She is buried with her husband. Together, they had four children: Manly "Ranald" (born 29 July 1887), Frances (born 28 June 1889), Catherine (born 20 May 1890), and Louise (born 21 June 1892). The family was used as the model for a series of popular stories under the general title of "The Little Colonel" stories.
